Our Goal
We have designed Learners Log to make it as easy and as flexible as possible to log your trips.
When you first start the Learners Log application, aside from granting access to location and notification services, to start logging a new trip, all you need to do is touch the “Start” button.
Start Logging
When you want to log a new trip, you do the following:
- Select the learner – last used, or only, learner automatically selected.
- Select the supervisor – last used, or only, supervisor automatically selected.
- Select the vehicle – last used, or only, vehicle automatically selected.
- Enter the vehicle’s odometer – the end odometer value of the selected vehicle’s last trip logged is automatically selected.
To change the start odometer value, touch the button to the right of the “Start Odometer” value. This will display the following, allowing you to change the value.
Once you have entered the current odometer value, touch “< Log” at the top left of the screen,
To start logging a new trip, simply touch the “Start” button.
NOTE:
You do not have to enter the vehicle’s odometer value before you start logging a new trip. You can enter the value whilst the trip is being logged, or once logging has been stopped, you can enter the vehicle’s end odometer value, from which the start odometer value is automatically calculated.
Logging
Whilst logging a trip, you can swipe up and down to view the various options available:
- Learner – The learner who is driving for this tip – you can change this at anytime.
- Supervisor – The supervisor for this trip – you can change this at anytime.
- Vehicle – The vehicle being driven – you can change this at anytime.
- Start Odometer – You can adjust the start odometer at any time whilst logging is active.
- Distance – The distance travelled – automatically calculated.
- Started – When the trip started – automatically set.
- Start Location – Where the trip started – automatically set.
- Duration – The duration of this tip – automatically calculated. Total and nighttime durations shown.
- Light – The current light conditions – Day, Dawn/Dusk and/or Night. Automatically calculated using location and time period of trip.
- Parking – Whether the learner attempted parking of the vehicle. Optional.
- Traffic – Current traffic conditions – Light, Moderate and/or Heavy. At least one type must be selected.
- Weather – Whether the road conditions are dry and/or wet. At least one type must be selected.
- Road – Type of roads travelled – Local Street, Main Street, Inner City, Freeway, Rural Highway, Rural Other and/or Gravel. At least one type must be selected.
- Notes – Annotate the trip with information about the learner, driving conditions etc. Touch the button to enter notes, or view the notes in full.
- Cancel – Touch to cancel and discard the trip being logged.
- Stop – Touch to stop logging the trip. The trip is not yet saved, and you can review the details of the trip before saving.
Viewing a MAP Of the Trip
By touching the “Map” button, located at the top right hand corner of the screen, you can view a map of the trip being logged.
Stopping Logging
When logging is stopped, a “Handy Hint” is displayed to help you with the next step, which is either:
- Review the trip details and save the trip,
- Resume the trip, as you accidentally touched “Stop”
- Cancel the trip (i.e. discard information about the trip)
Once you feel comfortable using Learners Log, you can stop the “Handy Hint” message from appearing. This is done within the “Settings” screen.
Stop Logging
When you have stopped logging, information about the trip is displayed, which can then be reviewed before it is saved:
- Learner – The learner who is driving for this tip – you can change this before saving.
- Supervisor – The supervisor for this trip – you can change this before saving.
- Vehicle – The vehicle being driven – you can change this before saving.
- Start Odometer – The vehicle’s odometer value at the start of the trip.
- End Odometer – The vehicle’s odometer value at the end of the trip. This is automatically calculated by adding the distance travelled to the start odometer value. You can adjust this value to reflect the actual vehicle’s odometer value, from which the start odometer is automatically adjusted.
- Distance – The distance travelled – automatically calculated.
- Started – When the trip started – automatically set.
- Ended – When the trip ended – automatically set.
- Start Location – Where the trip started – automatically set.
- End Location – Where the trip ended – automatically set.
- Duration – The duration of this tip – automatically calculated. Total and nighttime durations shown.
You can adjust the duration by making it less than the value logged, but you can’t increase it. - Light – The current light conditions – Day, Dawn/Dusk and/or Night. Automatically calculated using location and time period of trip.
- Parking – Whether the learner attempted parking of the vehicle. Optional.
- Traffic – Current traffic conditions – Light, Moderate and/or Heavy. At least one type must be selected.
- Weather – Whether weather conditions are dry and/or wet. At least one type must be selected.
- Road – Type of roads travelled – Local Street, Main Street, Inner City, Freeway, Rural Highway, Rural Other and/or Gravel. At least one type must be selected.
- Supervisor’s Signature – Signature of the supervisor. Touch the button to sign using the full screen.
- Notes – Annotate the trip with information about the learner, driving conditions etc. Touch the button to enter notes, or view the notes in full.
- Cancel – Touch to cancel and discard the trip being logged.
- Resume – Touch to resume logging the trip.
- Save – Touch to save details of the trip.
Supervisor Signature
When entering the supervisor’s signature, you are presented with a full screen:
Using your finger, get your supervisor to sign their name:
Once finished, you can touch one of the following:
- Cancel – Signature screen is dismissed with no change to the supervisor’s signature within the trip’s details.
- Clear – Erases the current signature, presenting an empty signing area.
- Done – The current signature is saved within the trip’s details.
When signed, the trip details being logged are updated to show the supervisor’s signature.
Saving Trip
When the trip details are saved, you will be shown the “Summary” screen showing the learner’s updated total and nighttime hours.
Reviewing Your Trips
The “Trips” screen shows the trips each learner has taken.
You can view the details of any trip by touching the button.
- Date – Start date of trip
- Start & End Time – Start and end time of trip
- Learner – Learner driving during trip
- Supervisor – Supervisor during trip
- Vehicle – Vehicle driven
- Duration – Duration of trip and cumulate total duration
- Night Duration – Nighttime duration of trip and cumulate total nighttime duration. Only shown if trip had some portion during nighttime.
- Odometer – Start and end odometer values and distance driven.
- Start – Start location
- End – End location
- Maximum Speed – Maximum speed recorded during trip.
- Light – Light conditions during trip.
- Parking –
- Traffic – Traffic conditions during trip.
- Weather – Weather conditions during trip.
- Road – Types of roads driven during trip.
- Signature – Supervisor’s signature.
- Date/Times – When trip details were created and supervisor’s signature recorded.
The “Map” button located at the top right hand corner, when touched, will display a map of the route driven for the trip.
